Subject: PMR 446 extending range

I have been trying to use Cobra 446 handheld radios in a woodland enviroment but am only getting max ranges of a 200 - 300m which is just not enough. Is there a way of significantly extending the range?

Also are there any differences between the brands are there some that perform significantly better than others and what should I look for?
