Hedstrom's Hat Leads Ducks Over Kings, 6-2
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jonathan Hedstrom tallied his first career hat trick and JS Giguere stopped 41 shots to lead the Ducks over the Los Angeles Kings 6-2 on Monday night at the Arrowhead Pond.
The victory was the Ducks’ first over their Southern California rival this season. Anaheim is now 1-1-1 in three games versus the Kings.
This was Anaheim’s first game at the Arrowhead Pond since December 21st, after an up-and-down five game road trip where the Ducks were 2-2-1.
“Our power play got us going and we seemed to be able to feed off that,” said Ducks Head Coach Randy Carlyle. It’s always nice when you can score some goals. For Hedstrom to come in and get a hat trick, it’s a big night for him.”
Another Anaheim rookie, Ryan Getzlaf – called up from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League – opened the scoring for the Ducks (5, Perry Kunitz) with a wrister past Mathieu Garon on the power play at 5:48 of the first period.
“Anytime you can get an early goal, especially in a game like this against a rival, it helps build the momentum,” said Getzlaf.
The Kings answered right away when Craig Conroy (17, Avery, Frolov) picked up his 17th of the season at 7:12 of the first.
The Ducks struck again on the power play when Andy McDonald (14, S. Niedermayer, Lupul) beat Garon to give the Ducks the 2-1 lead at 12:59 of the first period.
Anaheim carried the one goal lead into the dressing room but it would be short lived as Lubomir Vishnofsky (13, Cammalleri, Conroy) whistled a slap shot past Giguere with the Kings on a 5-on-3 power play at 46 seconds of the second.
Hedstrom gave the Ducks the lead for good with his first two goals in the second period.
“I know I can score, but I need to shoot the puck more,” said Hedstrom. “I always look to pass first, but I need to take the shot more. You need to be selfish sometimes.”
Hedstrom (9, DiPenta) rocketed a slap shot past Garon to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead at 8:21 and cleaned up a rebound (10, Marchant, Lupul) at 15:21 to give the Ducks the two-goal lead in the second period.
“It’s nice to do this against the Kings,” said Hedstrom. “That was very nice.”
In the third period, Chris Kunitz knocked home a rebound at 11:15 of the third period to give the Ducks a 5-2 lead.
Hedstrom (11, Lupul, S. Niedermayer) completed the hat trick when the rookie took a feed from Joffrey Lupul on a 2-on-1 at 13:28 of the third period and buried it past Kings goaltender Mathieu Garon.
“It was a nice pass from Lupul,” said Hedstrom. “I was shaking after I scored it. It’s big to get a hat trick in the NHL.”
Lupul picked up three assists on the evening.
The Ducks will play again on Friday night against rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at 7:30 PM.
