Hi Matt,

I am also an active referee and do not take drugs of any kind (other than prescription stuff when sick etc) however I question whether this is a breach of a persons rights.

In some industries where safety is a concern, like mining, I support it 100% - people's lives are dependant upon their workmate being clean in all respects (indeed they even breath test them etc).

I can sort of understand the contracted NRL Ref's - there may be a case that their employer, the NRL, has some right too, but even then what is the value? For players drug testing serves a 2-fold purpose:
- duty of care by their employer (the club); and
- to stop a player getting an unfair advantage over others.

Hard to say that a Referee is in the same category - indeed it may be arguable that it is in the games best interests if Refs do take performance enhancing drugs lol.

Essentially drugs are a police matter and not an employment matter IMO. It's bordering on a big brother type regime and worries me. What rights do we lose next????
