NRL "Ref Watch" -- Ben, Mon, April 14 2008, 23:35:07 GMT-10 [2]
Hey all,

Noticed on the NRL Website in the match reviews that there is a section called "Ref Watch".

A few of these havn't exactly been nice (although they are trying to be "politically correct" with their wording). And other comments were just plain smart-alecish. I noticed that the author on some was Big League, while on others they are NRL.

Are people conducting these "reviews" of referees qualified to do so? I mean we cop enough pastings off the media but especially when it is the NRL making the articles I am quite worried.

I'll admit, a few reviews have been good, but now it just gives people another avenue to attack us from and when the NRL is writing the articles, shows how much support we have in the game.

PROPOSED TRIAL OF NEW FORUM -- Steve Brown (ARLRA), Wed, March 26 2008, 16:08:06 GMT-10 [8]
An offer has been made to the ARLRA regarding the provision of a new look Forum which would be more responsive than the current one which has to be heavily moderated by one person. The new one can allow real time posting and relies on everyone who does post to do the right thing regarding being constructive in their posts. The catch is you would have to be registered to post and to do that you would have to identify yourself along with your association or affiliation with the refereeing fraternity. Posting would be password protected so you would not be able to use another's ID to gain entry. Guests might still be able to see what is posted but unless they are registered they would not be able to post. Any contravention of the rules (that you would have to agree to in order to register) would result in your posts being deleted and you being banned from the site.
Everyones' thoughts on this proposal would be appreciated.

I have noticed with the appointments of the last 2 weeks in Toyota Cup that Matt Checchin has been in the middle. Is there any chance that he will ref NRL ever again? I thought he was a good ref a few years ago when he was in The centre. he is a good "sideline official" aswell, but sometimes i think he is wasted running the line.

I saw on Fox last night that the Storm had brought in a new tackle, the chicken wing. It's where a tackler comes in to join his fellow tacklers by grabbing the ball carrier's non-ball carrying arm, pulling it away from him and then putting downward pressure on the shoulder. It looks as if the tackler's trying to rip the shoulder out of it's socket.

Surely the powers that be must put an immediate stop to this type of tackle. It's dangerous and can do permanent damage. One wrong move and the shoulder's gone.

One of the great frustrations already this season is the number of dropped balls that are ruled to be "knock-ons" when clearly the ball has not travelled in a forwards direction.

It seems that either the refs are not confident to let play go on when there is a dropped ball and/or they are taking a very soft option in calling up a game for a knock-on.

In the game I just watched, a terrible call of "knock-on" was made - the replays showed the ball went backwards from the player ruled to have knocked on, and that the ball was actually knocked-on by the team given the scrum feed - which nearly resulted in the a team scoring a try.

Teams are consistently being penalised for dropping the ball backwards, and it should be eliminated at this level.

my understanding of the obstruction rule is it is not obstruction if the defending player tackles the attacking player without the attacker putting a hand on the defender.
Is this correct

I see in the Telegraph today that John Hopoate stated that he has nothing against the current referees, but reckons that most of the players would prefer a referee who has played the game. I say bring it on. Let all the ex-players referee. Put them under the microscope so that they too can be ridiculed by tv and radio broadcasters alike. Everyone thinks that these ex-players are going to be so much better. I don't think so. Congratulations to all the current refs, you are doing a great job.

Just wondering if anyone seen the incident late in the 2nd half where the roosters kicked off and the ball was ruled out on the full by steve carrall. Matt Geyer knocked on THEN his leg hit the corner post which should have resulted in a scrum for the knock-on forst. but steve ruled out on the full. In no way am i blaming steve as it was a split second thing, and would be very hard to adjudicate, but my question is with the video ref now being utilised for strips in the PTB after seeing replays, why couldnt the video ref have a look at the replay and say we got it wrong fellas, its a scrum. With melbourne just scoring and the score 10-6 with 4mins to go, it was a MASSIVE call, and could of changed the game had melbourne scored.

in a day and age where the video ref is becoming more involved in the game, i think that would have been a good opportunity for him to step in.

I was sitting back having a cold one (coke) as i watched Shayne Hayne referee and i thought he referee very well on sunday.I thought he made some veyr good rulings along weith his touch judges and picked up some good forward passes which in some games you would see ;let go what are your thoughts on his game.

Hi,

After being told by the NRL and other sources that the three NRL "cadets" will not be fast-tracked, i was stunned on Saturday night at Gosford to see MR Henry Perenara sideline officiating beside Steve Carrall. Messrs Carrall and Perenara swapped throughout the game as touch judges, standing and running besides each other.

It is utter rubbish that a man who has never refereed in his life can walk straight into tough judging in the NRL.

Many referees at District and Junior Reps level would relish the opportunity to touch judge an NRL trial.

It isnt right that men who have been refereeing for years have been told of late that at 30ish, they are too old for grading, when players, i.e. Mellor, are over 30, never refereed in their life, and here we go, is now a sideline official.

NRL PLEASE EXPLAIN!

After the undue speculation leading into this 2008 season about the lack of experience, the NRL Referees should take note of round 1 and 2 as an advantageous indicator in terms of refereeing for the next 2 years.

Undoubtedly, there was the uncertainty as to the lack of innexperience witheld by the whistle blowers, HOWEVER, this has been all but displayed so far.

I would personally like to see the likes of Gavin Badger and Ben Cummins doing some tough games, as both have been refereeing well, and are undoubtedly the future of the refereeing Ranks.

Give them a go Finchy!!!

Souths v Roosters - T Archer

I thought Tony had a great start to the season. I'm not a hge fan of Tony as I think he's a typical copper, but putting that aside I could not find really any major matters that stood out. The Wing tackle was not something that Archer could be expected to have picked up.

I believe that the Riley Brown hit on Craig Wing was NOT within the Laws of the Game. Much the same as the hit on Andrew Johns the other year. Of note, both hits caused significant injury to the players.

If the hit has been declared legal, I am concerned that there will be an increase in this tactic, from NRL level down to park level.

Why do I believe the hits to be unlawful?

In both cases, the hit was a shoulder charge.

We can all agree there is a difference between tackles and shoulder charges (even though neither is defined in the Laws). However, the Laws treat shoulder charges and tackles differently, and implies they are not the same thing.

The Laws allow players to TACKLE an opponent who is in possession.

The Laws allow two players running for a loose ball to charge each other with the shoulder, i.e. shoulder charge.

So I believe that the Laws only allow you to tackle an opponent in possession, not shoulder charge him/her. One can also argue that shoulder charge is not effecting a tackle, so is an unlawful hit.

Either way, it is an unsavoury tactic that needs to be eliminated form the game

Well.....what an interesting game!

Good call Archer with the 2 send-offs IMO.

The sharks player was dead-set stupid. Not much damage done but that doesn't matter.

The worse one was the cheap shot by the Storm player - the sharkies player was being held by 2 players and defenseless. Gutless coward act and great call by Archer.

I'm sorry, but what do the referee's actually DO in the offseason?? That game was a disgrace! How did the video referee come up with a penalty against Glenn Stewart to disallow that try? He was not looking at the player... the Cronulla player was falling and it WASNT EVEN HIGH!!

So very frustrating and it's a bloody long season. Wake up you blokes! Some of these rule changes are a joke too. AFL is looking VERY good this season!!

With the exit of 2 of the most experienced refs in Clarke and Simpkins at the end of 2007 I suspect the 2008 season is going to be a bit tense with a large group of relatively inexperienced refs being thrown to the wolves this year.

So , Does anybody know the lucky 8 guys who get a gig this coming weekend yet ???

Just wondering if the on field gear has changed this year? i went to the foundation cup and hampstead and co were wearing a dark green shirt that had black and white stripes up the arms and across the shoulders? if this is the case, has it changed because this year is the centenary of rugby league ???

Hey guys,

Does anyone know of where I could find a training program for referees? I'm looking for one that includes everything from what running/cardio exercises to do and how many/often, weights excersise, and specific skills training also.

I'm getting bored of the same running everyday and want to mix it up a bit with something specific to what I need.

I've found a weights program on the NSWRLRA website and an eating plan. But any other weights programs would be appreciated also.

It is time to do away from the quick tap from a penalty kick. Essentially, the objective is to catch the opposition unawares any in many cases catch them offside and recieve another penalty 10m down the field.

Why should the defence be penalised a second time? It also always bad from the referees point of view because if you let the team take the quick tap, the defending team is usually back about 3 metres and if you stand on the mark and stop the attacking team, they bitch, scream and carry on because you are taking away a possible advantage.

The rule simply needs to be changed to something like, ' The kicking team shall not be allowed to take the penalty kick until all players of the non kicking team have retired 10m'.

Just a thought but I think it has some merit. It would certainly clean up this untidy aspect of the game.

Two weeks ago I wrote the following email to the NRL via its website -

"Greetings,

I refer to this link on the NRL website -

http://www.nrl.com.au/Referees/tabid/290/Default.aspx

Today i watched the NZ v England test match on TV and heard the lead commentator introduce the referee Tony Archer by saying "I refer to the NRL website which states that Tony has officiated 104 matches".

Immediately I knew this comment was incorrect.

However when I checked your site and went to the link Ive supplied you above I find that your site is supplying APPALINGLY out of date information. All of the stats supplied on the NRL site regarding these referres are current as at the start of the 2006 season ... TWO SEASONS OUT OF DATE !!!

Could you please correct this error ASAP because an overseas TV coverage has just made the info on the NRL website look like its being run by amaters.

Your reply would be appreciated."

How disgusting that the NRL site is so far out of date that it hasnt updated the referees profiles for TWO YEARS !

Also disgusting is that my email didnt receive a reply.

I urge everyone to send the NRL a complaint email via their website to raise this issue.

The game of leage has this week lost two greats of the refereeing role. Paul Simpkins and Steve Clark, with over 600 first grade games between them, will no longer referee in the NRL.

I would just like to congratulate these fine Gentlman of their positive contribution to the game.

Both are superior role models for any junior referees, and I hope we can produce many more like Clarky and Simmo!

So the question is - had that last penalty goal by Newcastle missed on Friday night because of the two Tigers players running through to charge the kick down ( how long have I been asleep or are we playing Union now ??? ), would Paul Simpkins have advanced the penalty kick 10m and give the Knights the opportunity for another shot at goal??

Hi all,

I am interested in what you think of an idea I had for reducing the impact of incorrect ref's calls to the result of NRL games.

I propose a �Challenge to Refs Call� is made available to each team at the time of the call, in the same manner as is now the case for Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments with the �Hawk-Eye� system. In tennis, each player is given a number of challenges per set that count down if the challenge is unsuccessful. If successful the player keeps the challenge. The decision is based upon a computer generated projection of the ball to determine if the ball was in our out, while in League the decision would be passed to the Video Ref.

How it could work - Each team is given two challenges per half. At the time of a ref�s call, the player involved indicates to his captain that the call was wrong.
The captain instructs the ref that they are challenging the call. The Video ref would then view the evidence and give the result to the Ref. If the video referee agrees with the original call, then the challenging team loose 1 challenge, but if he disagrees, they keep it to use again.

This system would allow the ref to keep on calling the game as per normal, and only if the players felt that he got a call wrong, and were sure enough to risk losing a challenge, would they challenge the call. I expect this would have the following positive effects to the game:
- As has happened in tennis, league players would no longer complain about ref�s calls as they now have an avenue for challenging if they truly believe they have been wronged
- Incorrect ref�s calls will have less chance of impacting the outcome of the game.

A negative impact of this system could be that it would slow the game down by adding more video referee pauses, however another idea may reduce the number of times the video referee is required. At the time of Team 1�s challenge to the ref�s call, Team 2 can be asked if they agree that the call was wrong. By telling the truth up front and offering a quick result, Team 2 may be entitled to an extra challenge, so long as they keep offering up the quick result in following challenges.

I am interested in what you think about this idea and it�s chances of being implemented in the NRL?

if you fast track one former NRL player into an NRL fulltime referee position then you are taking an opportunity away from a real ref who has learnt his trade the correct way.

the NRL should be putting the money into the development of young referees. this sort of development funding counteracts as a retention tool for teenagers contemplating refereeing against other career options.

im happy for former players to take up the whistle but they need to start from the bottom up. these cadet guys will be fulltimers learning the basics of reffing. thats pretty wierd dont you think?

They will be getting paid big money to ref school games whilst the average district referee organises and referees these games for little to no pay!

Just read that Steve Clark has announced his retirement after 15 seasons and 314 First Grade Games. Congrats on a great career Steve, which should of had a GF appointment in there in my mind, one that you fulfilled albeit.

Another rumour in the mill is that Paul Simpkins is considering retiring and returning to the police force full-time. anyone heard differently??

if this happens and both these guys retire, who will step up to fill their shoes? which are big ones in my opinion!

I was shocked to read on the NRL website that Michael Ryan passed away today aged 60.

Michael was a touch judge or in goal touch judge in each 1st grade Grand Final between 1986 and 1990

Michael was someone I looked up to when I was a young 16 year old junior referee in the old Western Suburbs district Junior league that covered the Ashfield to Lidcombe areas. He as well as good friend Michael Stone were both two guys who helped me thru the junior ranks and made a big impression on me in the 15 years or so that I refereed Junior League footy

I'm sure Michael will be sorely missed by everyone in the referee and rugby league community.

How is it that Jarred Maxwell got the gig for the Premier League GF ?

Ok , If Archer gets the main gig and you have the #2 ref (presume Simpkins) on standby then SURELY the #3 ref gets the Premier League game (so that means either Clarke or Hayne) ?

Seems very strange Maxwell getting the game.

Is there a policy I'm not aware of - somebody please advise

I read some comments in the paper this weeke allegedly made by Robert Finch that referees were not able to police some of the contact made with the head in a tackle (crusher tackle or suchlike) because it happened ater the tackle was completed and the player was being "worked on the ground".

A few points on this. Firstly, I am strugling to find "working the player on the ground" in the Laws of the Game, and didn't realise this was a new privilege given to players. I disagree that this activity occurs after a tackle has been efected, so that Misconduct 15.1.b cannot be enforced.

If this line of thinking is followed, it introduces a new grey area beween the tackle and the play the ball, essentially creating three phases: tackle, working on the ground, play the ball. So what Laws apply while working a player on the ground? Obviously the Laws relating to the tackle are deemed no to apply, so do the play the ball Laws come into effect? If a player is being worked on the ground, what are the tacklers doing? Still trying to effect a tackle, or to slow down the play the ball?

In most cases, I believe a ackle has been effected, and the tacklers are being granted extra privileges to turn players over or pin their shoulders or to somehow delay the process of the play the ball. This has been allowed moreso recently with the concept of the "dominant" tackle, which was supposed to allow the tacklers a bit of extra time to peel off the ackled player. What has happened is that this leniencey has gradualy grown and grown, and now we have the situation where ball carriers are placed in a vulnerable positions, being held by one tacker and having their upper body or head twisted by another player. If Robert Finch's cooments are correct, then it appears he is saying that contact with the head or neck of an opponent whilst working on the ground is OK.

There has been one significant injury as a result of these tactics (which are heavily defended by some coaches in today's paper), but I hope that it doesn't take a serious injury to bring an end to allowing this potentially dangerous and unnecessary facet of our game.

Does Robert Finch appoint Semis to the ones who are doing the job, or the ones who have done the job before..even if they make mistakes..such as Mr Checchin

It is with deep regret that the Board of the ARLRA advises of the passing of its Chairman, Mr Nick Euclid OAM, at 2pm today Thursday 27 September 2007. Nick was also the Chairman of the Queensland Rugby League Referees Board and a former leading Queensland referee. He will be sadly missed by the whole of the rugby league refereeing community.

Archer Grand Final Referee -- nac, Tue, September 25 2007, 15:28:51 GMT-10 [1]
The NRL has announced that Tony Archer will referee this Sunday's grand final at Telstra Stadium between Melbourne Storm and Manly Sea Eagles.

Archer is the 22nd referee to officiate in the season decider and was appointed after controlling the preliminary final between the Storm and Parramatta Eels on Sunday.

It is the first major refereeing appointment for Archer and he is excited by the achievement.

"It's an incredible honour and it's something every referee strives to achieve," said Archer.

The police prosecutor said that he wouldn't be reading the newspapers this week and NRL referee boss Robert Finch said he wanted Archer to go into the match with no preconceived ideas.

The grapple, crusher and ripper tackles will be policed. "I won't hesitate to penalise anything illegal," said Archer.

Referees coach Robert Finch also announced today that Steve Chiddy and Russell Turner would be sideline officials with Bill Harrigan an Phil Cooley in the video referees box.

I just read Tony has been given the GF. Well done and this appointment is thoroughly deserved. In my opinion he has been the form referee for most of the season, and hasn't put a foot wrong in the semis. I am sure he will prove that he is the man for the job on Sunday Night.

Now nwhat is the thought on the grand final referee. how can you have a referee who does not understand the play the ball rule. Player thurston tackles opposition player ,stands in front of tackled player which he is entitled to, tackled player stands up moves of the mark (one penalty) then pushes player thurston over (2nd penalty) play proceeds with Thurston still on side referee rules player thurston offside(3rd mistake within 1 movement) who are you kidding . Maybe the NRL will do anything to make sure at least one Sydney side makes the grand finalor am i just a cynic

I wrote to the NRL expressing my concern that Roosters player braith Anasta was allowed to slander in the media referee Ben Cummins after the Round 25 game against Souths & no action was taken. Here is a transcript of my email communication with the NRL as well as the appalling and gutless reply I received.......

If that was a coach saying that it would be an automatic $10K fine ... So what will the NRL do ???

Surely Braith Anasta has to be called up to account for this public ref bashing comment .......... SURELY !!

Please do something about this , his comments have seriously brought the game into disrepute.

Please REPLY advising if any action will be taken. If the NRL does nothing then you lose me as a fan.

Dear Stephen,

Thanks for your email.

We appreciate your feedback but Braith was appropriately punished for his actions. He was penalised for striking and later sin binned.

While his comments to the referee cannot be excused, it must be remembered that he had just been punched in the face. The referee dealt with the situation adequately on the field and we did not feel further action needed to be taken.

Thanks for your reply but you have failed to respond to the crux of my enquiry..

I am not interested in what happened on the field because I agree that the referee handled that (albeit very poorly in my opinion)

My concern relates to the post match comments he made to the media which i have already detailed to you.

My comments also relate to the NRL website publishing these outrageous comments in the match review. Is the NRL promoting these comments as being "acceptable" by publishing them on its very own website ?

If these comments were made by a coach the club would be fined $10K , so why has the NRL ignored these comments and why has the player been allowed to slander a referee in the media after the game and gotten away with it ?

I would be keen to receive a response ASAP.

Stories published on the NRL are written by AAP, an independent news agency. Sometimes they do not reflect the views of the NRL.

The NRL has the power to fine clubs and players for bringing the game into disrepute however players and coaches have a right to question and even criticise the performance of a match official. If a coach had made the same comments he still would not have been fined $10,000.
It was deemed in this instance that Anasta�s comments did not bring the game into disrepute.

So, Rule #1 for all players in the NRL in season 2008

Go and verbally assault ALL our referees in the media after the game. The NRL wont do anything particularly we now have this disgraceful precedent.

For my money the grand final referee from the previous season who is the incumbant has to be knocked off his pedastool to not get selection this year.

Thats the why its always been for as long as I can remember.

Going as far back as the mid 1970's -

Gary Cook (76-77)
Greg Hartley (78-81)
John Goucher (82)
Kevin Roberts (83-85)
Bill Harrigan (89-91 , 97 SL , 98-03)
Greg McCallum (92-94)
Eddie Ward (95)
David Manson (96-97)

All of the above guys retired after a 1st grade grand final appearance.

The only ref who as it turned out went one year too many was Mick Stone who did the reserve grade grand final after being pipped by Bill Harrigan in 1989. Stone retired after this game.

Paul Simpkins hasn't done anything wrong to be knocked off in my opinion and will get the grand final if he doesn't have a complete shocker in the next few weeks.

What are your thoughts ?

What are peoples thoughts on cutting the scrum? Is it a heinous offence punishable by lengthy demotion (as most old timers seem to think) or is it a new tool in the Refs weapons array used in getting to the right position?

All the old clich�s are thrown at me when I raise this at local level:
- you don't because you need to follow the ball in case of a forward pass;
- it's lazy (my personal favourite)
- it's the wrong "application" (now that's a newie which seems to be propagated in the Refs Coaches courses sadly);
- it's a sign of a lack of fitness;
- it's poor refereeing.

Yet, amazingly, none of the supporters of the "uncircumcised" scrum (i.e. no cuts lol)can provide me with any real reason why NOT too.

1. Re forward pass. A ref already judges forward passes while being in front of the play. Cutting a scrum will allow you to be in a better position to get 10 set, watch those nasty forward passes and as well grab the 5m offside penalty should it be applicable. Running around the base, avoiding traffic and those huge slow props will not;
2. It's lazy? How?
3. Wrong application? Of what? Nothin in my rule book says anything about what path to take after a scrum.
4. Lack of fitness? Now who's grasping at straws!
5. Poor refereeing. And we wonder why we have so much prob getting referees when we have dinosaurs running the game saying this crap. Personally what we should be coaching for is the right decision in the context of the game. i.e. play advantage or blow it. Not harassing refs as to where they may run.

The only real reasoning I can see for it is the knock-on at the base of the scrum. Well, a non-early departure should sufficiently prevent that problem.

Could somebody please inform me (maybe Mr Stone) what the protocal is in finals series matches where there are TWO video referee's in the box as is the case this weekend.

What happens if they hold differing opinions on a decision that needs to be made ?

one says try , the other says no try ... who makes the final decision ?

Surely to avoid a 1-1 stalemate in the video box the NRL should have a panel of 3 up there so that you at least will get a 2-1 majority decision

Well let's get the ball rolling on this one - I thought Bill was spot on with awarding the penalty try in last nights game. I called it as soon as it happened and I'm glad that Bill had the guts to use it. The option is not used enough - the movement itself deserved a try, it was excellent play from the Warriors.

A few parallels with the 99 Grand Final eh - Logan from the Warriors did a Mundine when he went for glory with two umarked players on his outside.

As a long suffering Dragons fan - i'm still in weekly electro shock therapy after the events of that day - I don't need the personal reminder on a Friday night, especially after having the day off!

Good game - hope the rest are just as intense.

Why oh why did Tony Archer pull up the game to check with the video referee when the ball was still live and a Parramatta player racing upfield? Have the NRL guys so lost their referee intuition as to when to stop a play??And how did the decision of a 20m restart come up? If anything, was there a knock-on by the Parramatta player and a goal-line dropout the correct decision? (The replays did not roll on long enough to really check this out)

As for the penalty try - if that was not a given, then we should remove the Law from the book!

I reckon Sean Hampstead has every right to be livid by not being appointed to a finals match this weekend, and to make matters worse they are sending him to north queensland from sydney to sit on his dairy air to do sweet bugger all!!!!! The match referee is lucky given his huge mistake in the middle of the season..... hard to understand the mindset of the people appointing games, keep your chin up Sean you deserve way better than what your getting.

Congratulations to Paul Simpkins on his performance this evening in the Tigers v Knights match.

That penanlty with 10 seconds left on the clock in my opinion showed a lot of guts. Sure it was the correct call 100% but there are plenty of other ARL refs who I think would have ignored it and let the game be settled in golden point.

Simpkins just maintained his #1 ranking in my eyes with that call. Gutsy call from a damn fine ref in my opinion.

Give him the grand final I say.

Have just seen the appointments for Round 24.

The match of the round, Storm v Bulldogs has been given to Ben Cummins. Is this a promotion for good work, or the chance for a big match, to prepare for a possible semi final.

I think at the moment he is the most fair and consistent of the refs.

What does Mick Stone and others think?

Just watched Amos Roberts (Roosters) go over the line and almost score. As he was about to ground the ball, Mat Rogers (Titans) has kicked the ball and caused Roberts to lose the ball backwards. Reviewed by video referee, no-try the ruling, no action taken.

I believe that kicking the ball from a player's possession is dangerous play and against the Laws of the Game. On that basis, I would have ruled penalty try to Roosters.

From the above ruling, can we conclude that it is considered OK to kick a ball that is being held by a player?

It is commonly seen that players come ion with the boot or the knee in an attempt to dislodge the ball from a player who is in the act of scoring, yet no action is taken on either act.

I recall Matthew Ridge (Manly) kicking at a ball in the same situation many years ago and action was taken, but now it appears is accepted in the NRL? (And hence filters down to park level!)

I think the main peoblem with the injuries in tackles is that the referees allow the tackle to go on too long. Once the forward progress of the ball has been halted the ref should call "play the ball" and penalise any tackler who does not let go or get off the tackled player immediately. This may necessitate the 10 metre rule being changed to 5 metres eg but it would stop all the ripping and tearing in tackles by both attackers and defenders and would save many of the neck, shoulder and knee injuries that are being caused by the wrestling that takes place before the ref finally calls "held'. It would also do away with all the 'surrender' rubbish that goes on. The ref can penalise a voluntary tackle as they have always been able to do. If the tackle area goes on the way it is now,with the number of injuries that are caused, the ARL will run out of players.

Hi,
I was just wondering if anybody out there had any information on how the referees were organised in 1997.
I always assumed that the ARL was the higher standard of football and that Bill Harrigan was the best referee at the time. Yet Bill did the Super League grand final. Did referees who officiated in Super League get paid more? Did referees officiate SL one week and ARL the next? Who appointed the referee, the NSWRLRA or was another body formed?

I think we are all getting sick and tired of the way that the first grade squad is copping negative (and often unwarranted) comments from the media

How do we resolve this ?

Well, interestingly enough I read an article in one of the papers recently written by Titans player Matt Rogers who suggested a solution to this problem that I think has a lot of merit to it

I think what most of our first grade squad lack is a voice to be able to have a right of reply to all the ref bashing that the media engages in

So what Matt Rogers said is that the referee , the 2 touchies and the video ref should avail themselves to a press conference just like the coaches and captains do after a game. The press can ask them anything they want to clarify any contentious rulings that may have taken place. I think if the officials of the game are able to explain why / how a decision was arrived at it would take a lot of the mystery out of the equation and wouldn't give the media as much ammunition to go after the match officials

What do we all think .... More importantly , what does Michael Stone think ?

I would like to ask of any opinions on Shaynes performance in what was arguably the game of the season (Roosters Vs Warriors). I was at the game, and was critical of a few crucial decisions for both teams.

a) When warriors scored off a clear forward pass to take the lead early in the 2nd half, shayne motioned his arm as if to say to the touchie "i thought it was forward what is ur opinion". Now obviously the touchie (Micheal Jones) got it wrong, as it was clearly forward, but if Shayne had an opinion why didnt he rule on it straight away?

b) the sin bin of simon mannering- definitely a professional foul, but i was scratching my head when steve price tackled amos roberts late in the game AFTER the Mannering sin bin, and held onto roberts and gave away a penalty. THIS INCIDENT WAS MOST DEFINITELY A PROFESSIONAL FOUL and warriors should of had 2 players in the bin.

c) In the 2nd half of Golden Point- Warriors attacking the roosters line, clearly the roosters were all offside and should have been penalised...BUT WEREN'T.

d) when steve price had the ball punched out of his arms and should have also been a penalty, what was the touchie watching there (once again micheal jones)??.

My question which i would like answered is a simple one...WHY ARE NRL REFS NOT PENALISING IN GOLDEN POINT WHEN IT IS A CLEAR PENALTY, ARE THEY AFRAID TO MAKE THE DECISION????

Because thats what it looks like..

I refer to the comment's made by Phil Gould during last Sunday's Game that referee's "bring it on themselves" by virtue of the fact that a rule was adhered to that Mr Gould felt should have been overlooked.

I am sure Mr Gould would have thought differently if he was the coach of the team involved.

But I would ask Mr Gould, did the referee who got assaulted in Canberra for applying the rules "bring it on himself"?.

Did the 14yo first year referee reduced to tears by a seasoned coach "bring it on himself"?

Obviously, Mr Gould has little thought for the Game and little respect for referees.

While ignorant comments like this are allowed by someone on the game's official broadcaster, without recourse, referees are going to struggle to regain the position of respect they once held.

Can someone tell me why the standard in the ARL of refereeing appears to be dropping, I don't know if it is that the game is getting to fast or not, but to me as someone who watches there seems to me to be a lot of bias going on.
Are referees in this day and age intsructed to keep the game even, for me it takes away the enjoyment of watching a game, when the result is decided by the whistle. I smell a rat.

About 11 months ago a topic was raised about the use of putting players on report for many incidents that can warrant send off or sin bin. In lower grades most of the things we see placed on report will warrant a send off or a player sitting down for 10 minutes in the bin so why do the NRL players escape the penalty that other players would receive

In a previous post, somebody mentioned that Rugby Union referees are given much more 'respect' than Rugby League referees. While I agree that rugby union players do use nicer words than rugby league players, I disagree that this is because they are more respected.
I know that as a referee I don't like it when a player gives me a gobful. But I prefer it that they do, then not. When a player starts mouthing off, at least you know where you stand with that player. Nothing drives me more insane than a player going yes sir, no sir when I know that they completely disagree...its patronising.
If a player wants to give it to me, normally I will just turn my back to them and get on with things. I will then say something to them on the fly along the lines of "you got that off your chest, now get on with it". I think then they truly give me a level of respect.

Rugby league referees are often targets for frustrated coaches and fans.
But next week they aim to be sources of hope for seriously ill children.
The NSW Rugby League Premier Referees Squad will donate their match fees from round 21 to the Starlight Children's Foundation.
The whistleblowers will also stage a charity dinner auction at Parramatta Leagues Club on Thursday, August 9 with all proceeds going to Starlight.
The goal is to raise $12,500 to purchase a mobile fun centre that can be wheeled through the wards of major childrens hospitals.
Nine time grand final referee, Bill Harrigan, is the MC and premiership winning prop, Paul Osbourne, has donated his services as guest speaker.
NRL referees will be there to mingle with the broader rugby league community.
It should be a big night, according to NSW Premier Referees leadership group member Gerard Sutton.
"One of the squad's goals is to make a positive contribution to rugby league. This year we realised it was also possible to make a positive contribution to a lot of seriously ill kids,'' Sutton said.
"Referees have been paying fines at training, conducting raffles and selling Starlight merchandise since the season began.
"Hopefully donating our match fees might cause people to think differently about us. We're blokes who genuinely care about the game and the people who follow it - especially the kids that are following it from a hospital bed.''
Tickets to the August 9 dinner are $65 and can be purchased from Jimmy Oliveira on 0405 149 457.
The Starlight Children's Foundation brightens the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children and their families, throughout Australia.
Hospital programs include Starlight Express Rooms, Starlight Fun Centres and Starlight Express Vans - geared to deliver fun and entertainment to hospitalised children.
Out of hospital, Starlight's Wishgranting program grants the wishes of children aged four to eighteen.
