As I said, it was something I had not seen or noticed before and was wondering if this was a trend the referees had begun.

I know over the weekend the refs wore rainbow shoelaces for a charity, according to a media release. Maybe the colour of the laces two weeks ago was another charity occasion or is it something which has blended into the referee's uniform?
