As usual, actually reading the Laws of the Game would answer the question quite simply.

The relevant Law actually states:
At the play-the-ball, no member of the team NOT IN
POSSESSION is to move forward until the ball is in the hands of the FIRST RECEIVER or the acting halfback elects to run or mishandles the ball.

Passing the ball to no-one would would be a case of mishandling the ball, allowing the opponents to advance at this point. Play should be allowed to proceed and the try awarded.
