VIC - Refereeing Rugby League involved building upon skill, including fitness, a cmprehensive, deep understanding of the rules, with the ability to effectively and proficiently apply them, without having an impact on the game. This DOES NOT happen over night. This takes years, and the NRL are ignorant if they think a plan like this will work. Instead of developing the LARGE amount of referees in the NRL Squad (Suttor, Sutton's, Shortall etc) who HAVENT refereed an NRL game, they want to try and bring in "has beens" who have played, which gives their body little more durability, as most will encounter chronic injuries i.e. knee injuries. They WILL NOT last long enough, and developing them, when you have up and coming officials is a waste of time and money.

The man who will be heading the program, Steve Clark, is probably one of the most knowledgeable men in the refereeing field. Surely he would be more useful assisting with Junior Reps, not with former players, who, keeping in mind, generally abuse the hell out of our referees. Why waste time and resources.

This will definately be a set back for up and coming, and Junior Referees. Why would they, including myself, bother training, working hard, when you know than former players can just jump in at any time.

This placn is absurd and ridiculous, and the NRL really do need to take a long hard look at the direction which they are heading in.
