The General Assembly

Brazil’s rainforest (Latin America)

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the United Nations so assembled that a program be funded to establish a land trust which will purchase the developmental rights to the rainforest from the property owners.

The General Assembly,

Brazil’s rainforest of the Amazon is being destroyed constantly each day. This not only affects Brazil, but the whole region of Latin America

III. Expresses Deep Concern

(A) The rainforest of the Amazon in Brazil is being destroyed at a rate of 75,000,000 square feet a day (equivalent to 5,000 football fields).

(B) The impact of this clear cutting has lead to overpopulation, polluted water sources, and outbreaks of disease.

(C) The continuation of this clear cutting will increase the air quality worldwide, resulting in lung diseases and cancer as well as other unforeseen environmental consequences.

IV. Is Aware That

(A) You cannot let the owners of Brazil pay for it because they are not wealthy enough to do so.

(B) Recognizes that the government would not only be helping one country individually, yet a whole region (Latin America.)

(C) THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the United Nations so assembled that a program be funded to establish a land trust which will purchase the developmental rights to the rainforest from the property owners.

III Recommends

(A) That the Security Council:

1. The program will utilize public and private donations to accomplish its purpose. Panama (Latin America) is asking assistance from the UN because the problem concerns all nations. If Brazil were simply to prohibit the landowner from cutting its trees, both the landowner and Brazil/Latin America would suffer economically. Neither should be asked to suffer when all are concerned. In the same way, the UN should not have to should the problem entirely on its own.

2. The program shall be managed the Agency of Environmental Resources in Brazil.

3. Initial funding shall be obtained from the General Fund of the United Nations

4. This initial funding will set up a nonprofit organization that will eventually campaign world-wide to raise awareness and collect contributions from private donors.

5. Staff for the program shall be supplied by the government of Panama/Latin America until the nonprofit organization can take over the functions and hire their own staff.

6. The Agency of Environmental Resources shall work with the nonprofit organization to prioritize which areas of land need to be purchased and develop an acquisition schedule base on these priorities.

7. The United Nations Environment Program will monitor the progress of the program to determine when the program is self-sufficient and no longer in need of funding by the United Nations.
