South Korea Name: Ji Jung
The General Assembly
Seats in Parliament held by women

The General Assembly,

Realizing that one of the UN¡¯s greatest goals in the millennium is to promote gender equality and empower women UN must take action and encourage women to work in parliament.

Aware that number of seats in parliament held by women in East Asia is low for example, Japan has a 10 seats and South Korea has 6;

I. Expresses Deep Concern

(A) In South Korea the number of seats in parliament held by women is only 6. compared to the other countries like U.S.A which have a number of14, South Korea needs improvement ;

(B) Japan too, has a low number compared to U.S.A or the other countries. Japan¡¯s seats held by women are 10 which shows that Japan too needs more improvement in this area

(C) East Asia is particularly weak in getting women to work more in parliament and since UN¡¯s goal is to empower women, getting them to work in the Parliament is important to East Asian countries

II. Is Aware That:

(A) Not many women are willing to work at the parliament;

(B) Many women are educated well and are able to qualify to work in parliament;

(C) Are not encouraged enough from others to go work in parliament;

III Recommends:

(A) That the Economic and Social Council:

1. Educate more women about working in the parliament like providing them classes with experts;

2. Encourage women to work in parliament, giving them the right idea not (government
is for men);
