Sanitation Issues Among Rural and Urban Populations

The General Assembly,

Realizing that all people have a right to safe clean water, yet 25% of the world�s population lacks access to safe water for drinking, washing, and other household activities

Aware that safe clean water is a necessary resource for a country�s well being and growth I strongly believe this problem must be fixed to improve developing countries and the lives of their citizens

I. Expresses Deep Concern
A. The impact of limited access to safe clean water harms the individual citizen by exposing them to disease that can be fatal and easily spread, not allowing them to support themselves or to help the economy

B. Low quality water in developing countries hinders them from economic growth by limiting the strength of their workers, lacking the water needed for running factories, and lacking the water needed for irrigation

II. Is aware that
A. 220 million urban residents in the developing world lack a source of safe drinking water near their homes.

B. Ninety percent of urban sewage in the developing world is discharged into rivers, lakes, and coastal water ways without any treatment.

C. 25% of the worlds entire population does not have access to sources of �safe water�

D. An estimated 900 million and an additional 2 million people die from water related diarrheal illness alone. Many more suffer from diseases such as bilharzia, cholera, elephantiasis, and hookworm

E. Improvements in water quality tend to lead to improvements in peoples health including their quality of life and their length of life. It has also been shown that water quality has an effect on the ability of developing nations to grow

III. Recommends
A. Evaluate the water qualities of both rural and urban areas of developing countries to see where the most desperate need for clean water is
B. Create local programs for developing nations to install wells to produce clean water for that areas citizens where possible

C. Set up an organization that will be in charge of organizing these programs and in control of organizing the budget.

D. Make investments to install desalination plants along for countries that have large maritime claims

E. Have people that can distribute water purification tablets to rural areas where there is no alternative
