The General Assembly
Women’s Role in Parliament

The General Assembly,

Realizing that when representing the people in a government, it is very clear that the people are represented unevenly and unfairly, which makes it so not all voices can be heard. A major source to this problem is in the fact that women are obviously underrepresented in there governments. As this problem has gotten better from the state it used to be, there is still a lot of room for improvement,

Is aware that this problem relates to every country in the world. The opinion of the people is very important, and is the reason why we have representation in the government at all. This however can’t be done unless all of the people are represented equally. In this case, this means that we must work to get women’s representation in the government equal to that of men’s,

I. Expresses Deep Concern:

(A) Women around the world at every socio-political level find themselves underrepresented in parliament and far removed from decision-making levels;

(B) The political playing field in each country has its own particular characteristics, one feature remains common to all: it is uneven and not favorable to women's participation;

(C) Women who want to enter politics find that the political, public, cultural and social environments are often unfriendly or even hostile to them;

II. Is Aware That:

(A) At the beginning of the 21st century over 95 per cent of all countries in the world had granted women the two most fundamental democratic rights. These are the right to vote and the right to stand for elections;

(B) Women's right to vote remains restricted mainly because the only candidates to vote for are mostly male;

(C) Less than 11 per cent of party leaders worldwide are women;

(D) 14.3% of both houses combined are made up of women;

(E) Research indicates that political structures rather than social factors play a more significant role in women's parliamentary recruitment;

III Recommends

(A) That the Security Council:

1. Civil society in general, including non-governmental organizations and women's groups, must play a role in advancing women's representation;

2. We must ensure that commitment to equality is shown in laws and national policies;

3. Women already in parliament must get as much help as they can when it comes to making sure that women's issues are taken into account in the debate and dialogue that takes place in parliament;

4. Since the media plays a huge role on regulating public opinion, coverage of events and organizations of interest to women must be made equal to those of men. This would be a big step in improving women's position on this issue.
