The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Stephanie Turner
The General Assembly
Needed Support for Public Education in Saudi Arabia

The General Assembly,

Realizing that the people of the United Nations work to promote social progress and better standards of life, yet not all the people of Saudi Arabia are given a proper education,

Aware that this violates their fundamental human right of education,

I. Expresses Deep Concern

(A) The Public Education Expenditure is only 9.5%

(B) The percentage of students enrolled in primary school is only 58% of the population of eligible schooling age;

(C) The percentage of students enrolled in secondary school is only 51% of the population of the official secondary schooling age;

II. Is Aware That

(A) In 1990-‘91, the percentage of students enrolled in secondary school was 31%;

(B) The youth literacy rate has increased from 85.4% (‘90-‘91) to 93.1% (‘00-‘01);

(C) The rate of the primary unschooled population is increasing;

III Recommends

(A) That the Economic and Security Councils:

1. Propose a plan with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, giving Saudi Arabia financial support for public education;

2. Work with the Saudi government to direct more of their oil revenues toward education;

3. Impose laws that require everyone to be educated to at least the end of secondary school.
