I really thought he may have chilled out some, but the tiger in him just may have cost him the jury's verdict this time around.

Up against a star, a local lawyer wins the day

Geoffrey Fieger is perhaps best known as the attorney for Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who made headlines - and earned a lengthy prison sentence - while he helped more than 100 people commit suicide.
Fieger's boastful, calling himself one of the most successful trial lawyers in the country on his Web site. In his law office in suburban Detroit, he has a media room with a television studio and live satellite uplink, to allow him to hold press conferences and appear as a legal commentator on national cable news shows.
And he's grandiose, often seeking - sometimes winning - record verdicts in medical malpractice and personal injury cases around the country that exceed tens of millions of dollars.
"Relentless, fearless, loyal, intimidating, charismatic and a winner ... that is who Geoffrey N. Fieger is," the Southfield, Mich., attorney says about himself.
But Fieger met his match where he took the case of an Independence child severely injured at birth and sought damages of more than $120 million in a medical malpractice case in Kenton Circuit Court.
On Wednesday, he came away with nothing, as a jury absolved St. Elizabeth Medical Center and a doctor named as defendants in the case of blame for the girl's condition.
Fieger also earned the enmity of opposing attorneys and the judge in the case. Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe numerous times threatened Fieger for comments and actions during hearings in the case.
David Kramer, the Crestview Hills attorney who represents St. Elizabeth Medical Center, twice filed motions asking Summe to revoke Fieger's special permission to practice in the Kentucky courtroom.
During closing arguments in the case Tuesday, Kramer several times reacted angrily and objected strenuously when Fieger called him a liar.
"Mr. Fieger has an extensive, well documented record of outrageous and unprofessional acts, past trial misconduct and open contempt for judges and the court system that clearly warrant exclusion from the privilege of practicing law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky," Kramer said in one court motion.
But in his motion, Kramer said Fieger once called the Michigan Court of Appeals "squirrels, mollusks and lizards." He quotes a Florida judge saying Fieger "has been nothing but bullying, loud, obnoxious, and unprofessional." He said Fieger was fined $20,000 for discovery abuses in Michigan.
On his Web site, Fieger says he is a "tireless and fearless worker for his clients," and he "devotes himself to getting justice for his clients."
