The boy eyed the cat curiously, now understanding her gift. There hadn’t been many shifters to begin with, but they were always valuable spies and allies. Will knew all to well how difficult an ability shape shifting was to control, even more difficult than his rouge fire. His brother, Jake, had been a shifter. But he had lost control of a lion form and was killed on spot by a Neutral. William had always tried to convince himself that Jake’s death had been a blessing: there were far more horrible things than death, neutralization being one of them.

“What are you-” She took his hand. It was unexpected, Will didn’t have time to realize what was happening. He froze as he watched her hand heal before his eyes. If she had held on any longer there could have been enough heat to burst her hand into flame at the slightest movement. He was always careful to keep his hands cold around those who didn’t know about him, but he hadn’t thought anyone was foolish enough to risk that, even a healer. The 13 year-old didn’t mention he had been worried, he didn’t want anyone to know he didn’t like the idea of taking lives. This was life, nothing was safe.

But relief and recognition invaded his mind: healers were in much demand as well. The Lightworkers had always cherished their healers and kept them secret in number from those who needed them most. Many deaths could have been prevented if the Lightworkers could have given up on their ephemeral flights of fancy long ago.
