Posted by Sundara" Beware the extremely material and fundamentalist idea put foward by many (or at least by Kashi at Yoganiketan) that you need to touch your tongue tip to pituitary gland or top of nasal cavity to do kriya 1 effectively and get kriya 2 or even pratyahara. "

NONE of this is taught by Kashi or at Yoganiketan. What is taught in Traditional Kriya Yoga is that Kechari mudra is required for higher kriyas...not for practice of first kriya, although process for acheiving kechari is traditionally given at time of initiation. This is the teaching of the original Tradional Kriya. It is not taught that the tongue has to be up to the top to get second kriya, much less required to reach fullness of realization in first kriya. Of course the Kutastha can be revealed in the first kriya--without achieving physical khechari mudra with tongue. You mis-understand. The process for qualifying for second kriya (achieving initial stage of khechari mudra) is supported by Lahiri Baba and Sanyal Mahasaya:

"The learned Master, initiates the disciple as per his qualities and his capabilities. If the disciple follows the instructions truly and dutifully, he attains perfection ---which is possible in the paravastha of kriya. There are different kinds of kriya acts, the able master does not teach them all at a time, only the ones who get well versed in the previous acts are passed on to the next class of acts. If after the first initiation the tongue is not risen or elevated(above the palate) then the second class or Vaisya class is not promoted to, and further lessons are not taught. Yet, if whatever is know or learnt is dutifully practiced with a concentrated mind and Pran, then the paravastha which is the fruit of such acts will surely be gained.....the aim[of kriya acts] is to achieve the capability of obtaining the paravastha of kriya and this is why, it is necessary to practice the acts of kriya." page 421 Vol 3 Spiritual Gita.

Sanyal Mahasaya is not talking about raising tongue to uvula, he clearly says what he means..above soft palate. The parenthesis is in original book of Sanyal Mahasaya.

Also, what is part of Traditonal Kriya is that complete realization can be achieved by first kriya alone. See Lahiri Baba's letter #29(Garland of Letters):
"Sri Guru's letter:
All can happen with the first kriya. Great devotion is necessary. Paravastha[the after-effect poise or post-Kriya state] and intoxication---all is in the first Kriya. Continue with Kriya. One must not be busy with little things. The one who remains focused on Guru, Guru keeps His eye on him. If one does not keep his own attention, who will perceive Guru's attention"

Look, I know Kashi personally. Although I hold him in highest regard, I am not trying to change your opinion of him; but I do not like this kind of mis-representation of him nor of Traditional Kriya Yoga. Traditional Kriya Yoga required practice of Khecharimudra for higher kriyas originally (120+ years ago), and still does require it in existing Traditional Kriya lineages today.
The route taken by the tongue (where it starts and ends and its path) in kechari is a secret matter between Guru and disciple behind closed doors. It is not a thing to be discussed on public message boards.

"Entering the tongue in the nasal passage in pathway of the upper palate is called ‘the practice of Khechari Mudra.’ Although this is a physical technique of hatha yoga, it [brings about] a steady and still condition and is necessary to draw the mind inward. When this condition [the achievement of Khechari] happens, the sadhaka experiences somewhat more steadiness and stillness and becomes ready to advance to the second level of Kriya.".............SWami Satyananda Giri
English translation Yoga Niketan http://www.yoganiketan.net/satyananda/satyananda.pdf

”Along with the practice of Kriya Yoga and the advancement of mental
absorption, the tongue continues to go up even further. It is said in the
scriptures that when the tongue arrives at the end of its full journey,
the state of "jada-samadhi" comes about. This Khechari Mudra is what
can be called as "breaking through the tongue-knot.".....Swami Satyananda Giri
English translation Yoga Niketan http://www.yoganiketan.net/satyananda/satyananda.pdf

The term "pituitary gland" is your own term and is a word never used by kashi. The route of the tongue in khechari is a secret matter between teacher and student. Khechari and it's application and relation to various Kriyas has to be learned from Guru only. Khechari mudra will never be understood on a message board and will always seem confusing unless learned in private from one's Guru.

--"Lahiri Mahasay says "Mouth of Guru" .The phrase "mouth of Guru" comes from the Bengali "guru mukhe," which refers to direct and personal initiation and transmission from Guru.
Please note that Yoga Niketan is a library---not a Kriya teaching institute; in the past Kashiji has accepted a few students at the instruction of His guru to keep that lineage alive.
