Subject: To eat or not to eat MEAT??? Decide for yourself
In reply to: kmd - 17 Aug 2005 's message, "Swami Sivananda on vegetarian diet" on 03:28:14 10/09/05 Sun

Nowadays, we are in a whole new era of lifestyle of living. Humanity has mostly done away with hunting and gathering activities of the past. Our working environment and everyday problems are significantly different than the old times. More physical force and strength were required to survive in the past and for that non-vegetarian food was a necessity. Now feeding on a fleshy food and not using the physical and gross strength can lead to dire consequences. Nowadays, most of us need more mental and subtle energy to face the day to day activities. The present problems are diametrically different than the past. Vegetarian foods are an abundance source of such energies and hence very desirable in this day and age.

Plus, for a flesh diet, it also depends how the animal was killed. There are some practices where the only flesh that is acceptable is by killing the animal in a certain ways. In certain cultures, animals are killed in an inhumane ways. Certain groups of people insist that their meat must come from an animal slaughtered by one of their own who cuts the throat of the animal so that it bleeds to death, faced towards their spiritual pilgrimage place. Can you imagine how much that animal feels the pain while bleeding to death? Then, such food will be definitely polluted with strong negative energy and violence.

When I was a teenager, I read a book and that left a deep impression on my mind. It indicated that when animal is about to be killed, it certainly senses the danger. It tries to run away but cannot as it is chained or tied to a rope. Hence out of desperate attempts, lots of adrenal rush flows in the body system and releases the chemicals like steroids etc in the body. The more it tries to escape, the more adrenal rush and hence the meat has very strong levels of those steroid like chemicals which generates the violence in the person who eats such food. That time, I did not know what those hormones are. But nowadays there is a lot of studies on those chemicals. Constantly providing the the body with such chemicals thru food, it makes one practically addicted to those chemical rush and its adverse effect as well.

Same goes for the birds..

If one really savors the flesh, then they should try to slaughter the animal with their own hand and it will certainly change the perspective.

Also there is a lot of cruelty in the dairy industry. http://www.anekant.org/visit_to_a_dairy_farm.htm

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. – Gandhi

“I look my age. It is the other people who look older than they are. What can you expect from people who eat corpses?” “I do not want to make my stomach a graveyard of dead animals.” George Bernard Shaw
