It is true for me. He was instrumental in making me consider the idea of performing any sadhana at all. Before that, I thought yoga was only for highly developed souls in India and requires a God-oriented, almost egoless character. Meanwhile I think I may have been right about the latter view, but still I got convinced that for a number of non-Indians yoga is definitely a possibility.

How Yogananda made a frustrated businessman millionaire transform into a saint-like man of realization is a mystery that I am unable to fathom.

Perhaps Yogananda was the only real yoga master in the Kriya tradition coming after Lahiri Mahasaya's direct disciples, the others being more or less acharyas. There may have been other exceptions, but probably they preferred to keep a low profile.
