In 1995 I studied the Bhole Baba literature, some six to eight titles, including the books by Shyam, Shivani and Reichel. The same year I went to see their Haidakhan ashram, though only for some hours as I was terribly sick.

I noticed that the whole area between Haldwani and Haidakhan was strange. This was also noticed by my friends. The local people had a very earnest look, even the children, as if they were all the time living in a different dimension. Never have seen such thing again. Even today in some parts India is a sort of otherworld.

This Haidakhan Babaji must belong to the type of irrational beggar-yogi same as Neem Karoli Baba or Ramsuratkumar.

Generally I like this type of yogi because they do not bother to rely on mental justification or philosophical subtleties.

Ramsuratkumar's three gurus were Swami Ramdas of Kanhangad, Sri Aurobindo and Ramana Maharshi. What a choice! - His American devotee Lee Lozowick has a disciple Mariana Caplan who is involved in the American Neo-Advaita movement but has written a critical book on it.

This Bhole Baba couldn't stand hippies, drug addicts and psychotic people, and consequently made them stay on the opposite river bank. His reproach "You go!" has become legendary. So he was not a hippie guru like Osho. In Haidakhan I saw two European ladies who had spent time with Bhole Babaji and appeared to be inwardly transformed. A fascinating sight. And on the way to the ashram we met a local devout Indian with wrinkled skin who looked like an old man but told us he was 39.

I just read "The Way of a Pilgrim" and it is an absolutely MARVELOUS book, the best treatise on japa imaginable from a non-Indian source.

One of Neem Karoli's direct devotees is a lady, a former teacher, running two small Ashrams in Germany, one in Cologne which she pays a visit to on a regular basis. Haven't gone to see them as yet. This woman has reportedly attained Jnana.
