Most of this history is in the I Am Harmony book by Radhe Shyam, which is currently being re-edited and will be digitalized online when it is all together time-wise. Unfortunately, Radhe Shyam (trained as a lawyer, retired from the foreign service) is also dealing with cancer in his 70's. (but regardless the project can be finished) Beautiful selfless soul, supporting others and projects with his pension while he rents a room.
There are two ways people could dispute who he was. One is, is the Mahavatar "Old Haidakhan Baba?" Baba Hari Dass and Mahendra Maharaj wrote books that he was was, that the various names of people referred to one and the same. I think more people accept this than not. The other is the newer one the same as the older one (obviously the bodies are somewhat different) When he first went real public, a villager in the area, after a dream where his father told him Babaji was around again, went to the cave in haidakhan and found an old man. He came back a few hours later with some milk and found the young boy body, who continued to talk to him the same way. But all these idenities hung out in the same place, worked with some of the same families through generations, knew the caves in the area where Babaji stayed, did similar "leelas", and supposedly had the same scars. People feel the connection through dreams, other type of connections, the stories are innumerable. At the same time, some may not feel the connection, it isn't true for them. It's a mirror of life. The devotees got way more than they ever thought possible and even though a lot of us have checked out many other teachers and received their blessings and they are wonderful souls, we don't see anyone like this.
The property was a small temple with a porch around it as well as some fields. Inside temple is as big as a small closet. I don't remmeber the acreage. The court trial was a very big deal in the region as basically it is proving re-incarnation or continuance of the soul or something far-out like that, but again has a lot more reality in India. People were hoping for a BIG miracle, and as usual the miracles happened internally for some of the people who were first against "the young boy guru" or "hill boy" andthey became his followers. Some pundits came to Haidakhan (in '71 I think), Thought he could be someone special, invited him to Vrindaban where they could check him out more thoroughly as a group. The Shastriji (a German lady is now organizing his work, by the way) there someone else alluded to had a mantra that was supposed to be known only by THE REAL BABAJI. Babaji somehow locked him alone with him in a room and (there may be slightly different variations on this little leela)this very mantra just bounced loudly off all the walls, that was it! I can tell you what Radhe Shyam says (who is a friend of mine), he is not sure wether the copy of the final decision of the court he got was that and just not signed, being a copy or that maybe they never signed it on purpose because of the implications, but the final outcome is the same, they gave him the land. This "hill boy" (as he called himself sometimes) who was very fond of the people of this region, the lower Himalyas, went from living in the jungle/forest (they use both words there) with only a basic set of cloths to wear for several years as a "teenager", to calling people through others and through dreams and appearances around the world to him (he never left India) and built an ashram that today can house a few hundred people I think, as well as having a couple more in India and several in the world. Electicity was installed once, but that never worked right. He has ashrams throughout the world and STILL appears to people (some people are more prone to dreams than others it seems), occasionally in person and attracts them. The devotee family in the West at least is trying to be more loving and sometimes that attracts people. Yes, he has given different answers about where he came from. The Indians seemed to think than he had either remanifested a body from nothing (yogis can do this) or had worked over a dead one - he sure picked a beautiful one, but it was never meant to last. There have been instances when people saw him, old and new bodies, in different locations at the same time. Once he gave someone somewhat of an analogy about how electricity works in reference to his body coming here in the modern times. .

I think even he didn't want to disturb people who were "set up" in something, at least to some degree (he also disturbed everything a lot as well), that is he respected everyone's traditions and belief systems, stopped a group of Sikhs went they started to unwind their turbans for him, then he put on a turban. People are into their path, maybe he just let them alone. Maybe they weren;t open enough, once he went through the ashram and took everyone's photos, saying no more photos, obviously trying to tell people not to be attached to the form. One of his ashrams in Chilyanaula, right outside Rhaniket, where once can drive wtih car,(as opposed to mountain ashram which requires hiking or a truck ride) is somewhat near the Vaisnabi temmple where L.M. had his initiation and people go there from the ashram. There was a guru in India, died in the 80's, Sita Ram Dass Omkar who pranamed to Babaji and obviously treated him as a guru, he had 50 some ashrams. Gangotri Baba, who was very old, came down from Gangotri (source of Ganges) in the higher Himalyas and gave "newer" Babaji a mala he said he had been keeping for him, this had been given to him by the "older" form. There were yogis from hills that would come down to get a blessing, the govener of UP (which later got split into two states) became his devotee and would sit lower than Babaji. Other local babas would comment on him being a very old man who is controlling the universe. That is all I can think of at this moment.
In the end, I don't think any of his devotees care what one calls him or not, who he is or who he isn't, it continues to be the most amazing experience in life, even though the body has been gone for over 20 yrs!
God is much bigger, multi-faceted and interesting than we could ever imagine. The thing is, we would all like a magical body to hang around, (it is there in the non-physical, any aspect) and this teaching stuff is happening in a lesser intensity and less obviously in every day life as well. WE have to do the work now, not continue to hang around like the little babies wanting spoon-fed like we were and it isn't always easy, but then there is a lot of bliss

Peace and Love

True
