Who is Babaji?

Babaji is the same being mentioned in "Autobiography of a Yogi," by Yogananda. In fact, he had to prove in a court of law in India that he was this same person to live in and own the property near the village of Haidakhan. Of course, this type of proof in court could only happen in India! It is a great story, though, and we will share the newspaper accounts of this incident elsewhere in the webpage.

In his book, Shri Yogananda states that any time you say Babaji's name with reverence, he sends an automatic blessing. This is always true. You can do it right now, and it will happen! It is good to call Babaji's name whenever you are in trouble or need of assistance. He always hears this and responds in some positive way. The photos you see on this website are of Babaji during the 1970 to 1984 time period (unless otherwise indicated), when Babaji first came to Haidakhan and lived in a cave near the village of Haidakhan. He came in silence and rarely spoke. At that time, he looked very intense. Those around him claimed that when he looked at you, his gaze was so piercing it felt like a laser beam. Some would run away screaming!! From this remote location in the Nainital District of the Kumaon Region, he called together people from many different countries of the world, told them his message, taught them the spiritual practices and principles, then he sent them home to their area to spread the message. Some were to start centers or ashrams where people could come for learning. Some were to put the principles into practice in their normal work place. ALL were asked to spread the message in whatever way possible. The personal stories of those who were with Babaji are often very inspirational and enlightening. Babaji has said he is only a mirror for each of us to see and learn more about ourselves. These stories portray wonderful tales of self-discovery and improvement in the individual's life.

Babaji insists that we put the emphasis on his message more than on him as a personality or a body. This is sometimes very difficult, as he had so much charm, charisma, beauty and grace. It is a great blessing even to look at his face! He says all of us must not attach to the physical body. We must attach to who we are before the body and who we will be after the body is gone. The body is temporary, impermanent The only constant in this world is change.
