Subject: Thoughts on Marist game

- big barometer game for 4th or 9th place, at one of the tougher places to win on the road.

- We have had a some tough games at there place and have only won 3 of the last 5 times at Marist.

- Marist is a funny team the last 2 years, as they have essentially the same team, except for the 7-0 James Smith instead of Mcclukin..... but have been very streaky. The started out at the top of the MAAC last year (7-1) and then proceed to go 1-14 in their next 15 MAAC games. They now have won 3 in a row MAAC games with a big win over Manhattan. Go Figure.

- My feeling is that they can be very good, especially at home. Their players fill the roles very well, Jared Jordan is a excellent PG, Whittington is one of the best shooters in the country. And they have a 7-0 center in James Smith and 6-8 PF in Ryan Stilphen, both who average 12ppg and 7rpg.... thats some good balance.

- My feeling is that our best matchup up front is with Max and Middleton. And my thinking is that Middleton has got to play because of the 7-0 Smith, but also because he needs to keep Max out of foul trouble.

- Someones got to always cover Whittington, and a defensive focus is needed. The frosh usually dont have that focus on defense, and I think Todd's agressiveness on offense puts him in bad position to get back on Whittington, so I see MVS and Bell as beiong critical this game.

- And Jared Jordan is their playmaker, creator, and best palyer so "D" on him is critical.

- I feel we will be able to score on them, but I think our defense needs to dictate if Marist is a 3-0 , 7-1 type team or a 1-14 team.

"With the Stags struggling tremendously at the defensive end, look for the high-powered Marist offense to take advantage of Fairfield's weakness. "

[> [> Poughkeepsie Journal - Prgame story -- JoeStag, 12:45:41pm 01/20/06 Fri, [1]

"Coach Matt Brady hopes his Red Foxes will be able to guard against both any letdowns, and against Fairfield's perimeter. "The key to playing Fairfield is defending the three-point line," he said. "They shoot 39 percent, which is a heck of a percentage. As long as we can get back and guard against transition baskets and limit our turnovers, we'll be fine."

Our opponents have our M.O. We will need Max's inside scoring, some offense from Mamadou and Middleton, and drives by Todd to balance off our perimeter game

A couple of thoughts. While the Marist roster hasn't changed dramatically, the players, especially Stilphen have improved. Last year Marist relied much more on the perimeter game. As went Whittington, so went Marist. This year they have shown they can be competitive and even win when Will is sputtering or gets effectively defensed. Two cases in point are the Siena and Manhattan game. Siena did a great job shutting Will down late in the second half, so they pounded the ball inside to Stilphen to scored 8 late points to seal the win. In the Manhattan game Whittington had 10 point and Jordan had 7, but an inside gameplan and Stilphen in particular, carried the day. That would have impossible last year. Marist's only senior, Carl Hood, has really matured and gives then an dependable, athletic player at the 3. Marist shows flashes of being a much more complete and balanced unit in 2006.

The streakiness (not the losses) I believe is largely a function of the schedule. They lost 3 in a row to Ohio (109), Manhattan (45) and Iona (55) all really good teams. Then they has a two game downer against Canisius (263) and Loyola (108). I am definitely not saying they would have won those games had they been scheduled at different times, the record would be the same. It would just look different.

Lastly, something I really like about the team is that they have lost only once to a team with a lower RPI. I think that speaks well regarding their ability to focus on a gameplan rather than the standings or the name on the jersey.

Last year these two teams were separated by only a couple of points. I believe McClurkin, of all people, hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer in Bridgeport and Todd returned the favor in Poughkeepsie. I have no reason to believe it will be very different this time around.

Good luck and Go MAAC!!!!

Old Fox,

I agree that Marist is well balanced on the inside and outside, and if the players have really improved, then we we will have a lot of trouble tonight.

I usually feel pretty good about our chances against any MAAC team; However, I do not feel good about this game for many reasons. I do not think we matchup well with Marist, and playing an away ESPNU game is very difficult. I would also have expected that maxwell would be playing with more consistency at this point. I thnik we are still trying to put pieces together, while Marist has had a solid unit for some time. Lots of experience on their part, while we are relying on some frosh, Han abnd Herbie, to contribute heavily.
