Subject: Athletic Funding

St. Joseph's University places a tremendous amount of importance on it's alumni and their contribution to athletic funding. This from their website www.sju.edu.... " THE HAWK ATHLETIC FUND now in it's fourth year is the lifeblood of Saint Joseph's University Athletics. Through your annual contributions, this fund supplements the University's alloted budget in the all important areas of recruiting, travel, equipment, facilities, academic advising and medical supervision. Your gift is essential in allowing Saint Joseph's University to remain competitive in the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5. HAWK ATHLETIC CLUB, Want to become part of Hawk Athletics in a way that will really make a difference? Join the HAWK ATHLETIC FUND and play a vital role in strengthening our athletic programs. In addition to knowing that you are supporting student-atheletes, you receive membership benefits. Contributions of any amount to Saint Joseph's University athletics are always appreciated. Please note that membership in the HAWK ATHLETIC CLUB begins with an annual contribution of $100. Hall of Fame Level($5000+) SJU jacket and pregame dinner with SJU President and Athletic Director. All American Level($2500-4999) Autographed basketball and prefered parking. All Conference Level($1851-2499)Reception with coach. All Tournament Level($1000-1850)Membership in the Berlein Society and invitation to it's events. Athletic Director Level($500-999)Ticket priorities to away games. Coaches Level($250-499)SJU decal. Varsity Level($100-249)SJU honor roll recognition and Hawk's Newsletter." Also on the website is a letter from the AD thanking the fans for their support, describing their plans and goals and links to all the athletics that contributions can be specified for.

If you go to the Fairfield Stags website, our Lyons-Lademan Athletic Fund is hidden under "Links". When you find it and click on the site, you get a message that says the site doesn't exist. Obviously St. Joe's realizes the significanse of staying connected with it's alumni and even more importantly, their financial contributions.

I think the 6th Man Club, in particular Joe Stag, does a tremendous job as a Booster Club to connect the alumni fans with Fairfield basketball but there is only so much that they can do. It has been mentioned many times on this board that the University needs to reconnect with it's alumni and what better way than to have Fr. von Arx through the University's Development Office and Alumni Office set up a program similar to St. Joe. I don't know about you guys but I personally can not contribute $5000+ a year to it but I'm sure there are Fairfield alumni that can and would at various levels if reached out to. Many alumni are not able to get to AHY or back to campus for games but would support Fairfield Athletics. The Alumni Office knows who we are, or should anyway and all alumni and friends of Fairfield can be solicited by Fr. von Ark, the local Alumni Clubs can appeal to it's members, class Reunions and Homecomings happen every year as a source for further contacting. This has to be done at the University level like St. Joe's but only IF the University wants to stay connected with the alumni fans and reconnect with all alumni and make them a part of Fairfield Athletics.

I notified Vic D'Ascenzo of the Lyons-Lademan Athletic Fund and told him of our website problem. I suggested that Fairfield also might want to look at the way St. Joe's does their Hawk Athletic Fund.
