Subject: Jesuit tournament

Great win last night and hopefully more good things to follow.

I know that it has been brought up before but what about a "Jesuit Classic" of both men and women at AHY of just Fairfield, Fordham, Holy Cross and Georgetown. Maybe to start off the season or a Christmas tournament? It is not a "local" CT event like Fairfield, SHU, and Quinnipiac but I would think that those Jesuit schools would probably have a lot of alumni and basketball fans in this area or within driving distance of AHY. I'm sure that those schools have their reason to play or not to play each other but with the cooperation and promotion of the President, AD and Alumni Offices of each school it could be a great annual event that could benefit everybody and hopefully someday would include more Jesuit schools. If it is ever going to happen, it has to start with some school pushing for it and has to start now. I would think that there has to be contacts, connections and friendships among those administrators that could get it done.

Is Fairfield, at any level of the administration, even interested in working to schedule such a tournament or do they have no interst at all?

This season Fairfield played Fordham and Georgetown. Fordham played Holy Cross and Fairfield. There is a relationship and a history between the schools that should be able to work out a tournament if anyone wants it.

This will never happen. Can you imagine the Baptist Invitational Tournament or the Episcopalian Shoot Out?

I guess you don't know your college basketball history. Your "absurdities" are not so far fetched. You ever hear of the National Catholic Invitational Tournament?

How about the Jewish Jamboree?

This blurb appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer in December.

Event for Jesuit schools never got full support
Xavier notebook

By Dustin Dow
Enquirer staff writer

OMAHA, Neb. - Just a few years ago, there was a vision that tonight's game between Creighton and Xavier would be a part of something larger.

Instead, when Xavier and Creighton meet at 8 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha, Creighton's 15,500-seat arena, it will feature two of the most successful Jesuit basketball programs in the country, but that's it.

The plan headed by Creighton and Xavier to create a Jesuit Shootout among the nation's Division I Jesuit basketball programs never came to be.

It had the leadership of both schools' athletic directors and the support of ESPN, which wanted to model such an event after the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

But it didn't have two of the most prominent Jesuit basketball programs, Gonzaga and Marquette, on board, which ultimately stalled the idea.

"ESPN was willing to give up commercial spots to televise ads about the Jesuit mission and the participating schools' commercials," Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said. "Gonzaga and Marquette didn't want to be a part of it. I was really disappointed with their response."

Rasmussen worked closely with former Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski and former Xavier president, the late Fr. James E. Hoff, S.J., in developing the concept. But Gonzaga and Marquette, which have higher national profiles than other Jesuit programs, did not see a benefit in participating.

"There are a lot of people across the country that don't know what it means to be a Jesuit school," Rasmussen said. "Fr. Hoff and I thought this was a tremendous idea to promote the Jesuit mission. ESPN was very interested."

Call it whatever you like but Fairfield, Fordham, Holy Cross and Georgetown playing a tournament among themselves just might fill some seats at AHY with their alumni from the area.

Of course very successful programs like Gonzaga and Marquette wouldn't want to be part of it. Why would Georgetown want to play in a tournament with Fordham, Holy Cross, and Fairfield? And who's gonna guarantee money to make it worth their while? We already know that Fordham doesn't draw at AHY. I know Holy Cross wouldn't do any better. And 3-8 Fairfield?
The idea is ludicrous.

A tournament with Fordham, Georgetown, Holy Cross and Fairfield could draw if promoted properly. An event like this would need the right sponsor. The stags sold out a holiday tournament 12 years ago when they played at Alumni hall. Granted a sell out was only 2900 tickets but that's not to bad given school was out of session and there was no big name draw like a Georgetown.

For an event like this to be successful, the following elements would be required:

1) you would need a sponsor with deep pockets to offer a guarantee to attendees
2) You would need at least one big name team (Georgetown)
3) Fairfield would need to be having a decent season (not enter the tourney 1-5)
4)You would need to promote it properly
5) The tourney would need TV coverage.

Unfortunately, this won't happen as Fairfield has proven inept at securing items 2, 3, 4 and 5. But an independent sponsor (like a UTC or GE) could make an event like this a success.
