Subject: The Case for Middleton

Middleton leads the team in rebounds per minute among players who have played 100 or more minutes. (.21)

Middleton is far and away the best defensive rebounder on the team with .14 Defensive rebounds per minute. Todd is second on the team at (.09). Maxwell and Mamadou, while showing strong offensive rebounding numbers are at .06 DRPM and .08 DRPM respectively. Middleton has more than twice the defensive rebounds per minutes of Maxwell.

Middleton has the highest shooting percentage among players taking 10 or more shots. (.522).

I know Middleton has to grow with the job but 20 combined over the past 2 games (10 minutes per game) doesn't seem like a lot for your top rebounder and top shooting percentage player to get. He's not getting that much better watching from the sideline. His lack of playing time is more understandable now with Maxwell back but it hard to understand Alvin Carter doubling Middleton's minutes so far this year given Alvin's shooting percentage is half of Middleton's (.265) and his rebounding average per minute is running at 60% of Middleton's.

Alvin Carter has contributed greatly to the Stags but he is a full 5 inches shorter than Middleton. Its simply a fact. As well as he plays he is physically limited at the center position and he really shouldn't be asked to play that position. It was not fair, yet he did it and he did his best. He is a 6'4'small forward asked to guard and rebound against players 6 to 8 inches taller. This post is not intended to be a knock on Alvin, rather the point is to ask what TOT is thinking asking Carter to cover these bigger players?

At some point TOT has to realize that Middleton is the only stag with the physical attributes to play center. And consquently the job should be his unless and until he shows he is hurting the team by being out there. Frankly, given the numbers he has put up so far, you'd have a hard time saying he has done anything but exceed expectations.

I must admit, I have been impressed with two facets of Middleton's game. He seems to have a natural shot blocking ability. And he is a better looking shooter than I expected coming into the year. I was beating the drum hard for him to get more minutes during the first semester but its not as critical now that Mamadou and Maxwell are playing.

I agree Middleton has looked really good. It also begs the question 'Why didn't he get more playing time last year, especially in the games the Stags had huge leads". Best way to get better is by getting PT.
