In reply to: Red Rugger 's message, "Canisius Game" on 07:16:10pm 01/07/06 Sat,

OldFox, I agree that this season is going to be a lot of ups and downs for most MAAC teams, and Canisius is looking to be playing with alot of confidence now. Its funny how Canisius, Fairfield and Siena are similar style teams, being smallre in size.

RR, Agree with a lot of what you said, but I would add that I think that we lost this game because of 2 basic reasons:

- We blew at least 8 wide open Layups/One Footers. And these were completedly uncontested. Missing a bunny's happens to everyone.... but not in the same game. Many players missed easy shots. Maxwell was just way off tonight, maybe his worst game of his career from an offensive perspective. I expected a game like this in his 1st game back, not his 3rd had an of course

- Defense was awful. Canisius only missed 18 shots all game. They only took 45 shots, we took 74. We forced 22 turnovers, thats good but our problem this game was that our guards were allowing dribble penetration. At the Post game, it was mentioned that the players are taught to play help defense if someone gets beat, and we did that. But the problem is that we are getting beat too much..... not playing basic "D" on the outside. Did not matter what "D" we were playing the basic defense of covering your man tight was not there. Both Canisius and Siena are good guard penetrating teams, but TOT and the coaching staff have to correct this basic problem. IMO, its teaching individual defensive techniques.

The stat of the game: We had 16 O-boards and Canisius only 6 O-boards, but that was very deceiving stat as Canisius only missed 18 shots. Of those 18 shots they had 6 O-boards, so we really only stopped them from scoring 12 times from regular shots...... and we stopped them 22 times by turnovers.

I got a call from a high school basketball coach here in CT that went to the Fairfield game yesterday (I did not) and knows that I follow the team. He called me this morning and told me that he felt it was one of the worst coached games he has ever seen (on the Fairfield side). He said that a parent at a YMCA level game could have rightly been upset at the way Fairfield was coached. Basic strategies were ignored and the players from Fairfield seemed listless and uninspired.
I am only reporting what someone else told me but it goes along with several others views posted here who attended the game.
