Subject: Thoughts on Maxwell's return

The addition of Maxwell along with Mamadou give us an immediate boost to our frount court talent and depth. And if both of them are in the line-up, they also make us very athletic and quick upfront, and they could be our 2 best rebounders (not counting MOS). But here are some questions that I have been pondering:

- How will it affect Max if he is not playing next to a Big Man like Gai or Thomson?????

- Will we do away with the 4-guard offense now that we have Max, Mama, Middleton, and Carter (and Reedal)?????

- Does the addition of Max and Mamadou help our defense?????

- Does going back to a 3-guard offense, possible mean that we shoot less 3-pointers .... which has been our strength this year????

- Is Mamadou closer to Max or Carter talent wise.

IMO, the 4-guard offense is history, and that alone will help our interior defense and rebounding. I also think that Max and Mamadou's athleticism will help us defend the athletic forwards in the MAAC like CJ Anderson, and Darnell Wilson. However it will not help us defend the big centers like Dunston..... that has to come from Middleton's improvement. But I think we have been burnt by both type of frontcourt players, so I think he have solved at least half of the defensive problem.

Going with only 3 guards menas that somebodies PT is going to get squeezed, but at least some players will back to there original positions. I think we will take less 3-pointers, but hopefully still shoot around 40%. Hopefully that will be offset with more trips to the FT line. I think our offense will have to be invented, and hopefully we can work most of the issues out in practice and against Cal State.

Will Max be better or worse without playing next to Gai or Thomson, and will he shoot 53% overall and 56% vs MAAC comp?????. This will be interesting to see, as I always believed that Maxwell can be load to stop if he has a wide open middle in order to operate. I thought he played some of his best ball when he played with Thomson, when Robbie set-up on the outside and drew the opponents biggest defender away from the hoop.

Like all transfers, Mamadou is somewhat an unknown until he steps on the court, but if he is Maxwell-like, this could be interesting

Dewitt and Dou make us a better balanced team and thats going to help the other players confidence. It looked to me that the players were getting down on themselves because we were playing guards at the forward position and we could not score down low. On defense the players had to collapse on the entry pass and then try to get out to stop the three. That had to be frustrating. Now we can matchup better. I feel we are a real team for the first time this year, and do things like attack the basket and get our opponent in foul trouble.

I think the real key question will be how it will effect our defense. In reality as CJ suggests, the outside people had to do too much helping on the inside, which left the whole team defense out of wack, which in turn led to many easy baskets against. That has to change!

I would agree that everything comes down to defense, especially in the interior. If Max's game is back, then I am more than comfortable with his defensive matchups in the MAAC. I have not seen enough of Mamadou's "D", but athletically he should be able to do what Max does.... but thats a big "IF". I would agree that we need Middleton to stepup, if MOS does not return.

If we have the proper matchups then we don't have to cheat on defense.
