Subject: Nero gets MVP as Red hook wins Tourney

The Daily Freeman opening paragraph says it all:

KINGSTON - Greg Nero answered the challenge of a physical Kingston High defense Wednesday night to lead Red Hook past the Tigers 68-49 in the boys basketball championship game of the Ron Scheffel Memorial Tournament.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Nero scored 23 of his game-high 33 points during the second half. In Tuesday's opening round, Nero had 35 points as the Raiders slipped past St. Mary's of Long Island 74-69.

The recurring theme that I keep on hearing about Nero is that he is quick and can handle the ball very well.... and because of that we can play both outside and inside and be a SF or a PF. He might fall into the category of a "tweener" forward. But in his case, it seems like he is a tweener that can play both positions effectively.

Sometimes the problem with "tweener" forwards are that they are not quick enough to play the 3/SF (especially defensively), but also not big/strong enough to be a PF as a rebounder/defender..... meaning that they really cannot play either position effectively as their mismatches in quickenss /size hurt them more thant help them. I would call this a negative tweener, and Nero does not seem to fit this category.

Nero's competition in HS can be questioned, but these last 2 games were against good teams (especialyy St Mary's) and its nice to see him come up big.

For all of us, myself included, who have been disappointed in TOT's inability to recruit a big man, he seems to have recruited a keeper in Han and a possible one with Nero. He may be only a decent big man in 2006 away from a very solid nucleus. Here's to good fortune in 2006.

Nero does seem to be a very good get, with multiple skills, but I would also include MOS as a player in that list. He really had made great strides coming into this year, and was primed for a big year. I do agree we need another stud big man that can contribute right of way...... about 6-8+ but known more as a banger/shotblocker. We go into next year with

6-10 Middleton
6-8/6-9 Recruit
6-7 MOS
6-7 Nero
6-6 Reedal
6-6 Hawkins
6-4 Mamadou

That will give us height, depth, talent and experience at Forward/Center, plus a variety options to matchup with most teams.
