AFI's Picks

First, I'm very surprised that a line from Caddyshack made the list. I'm happy, though. But I don't get some of the other picks at all. "Attica! Attica!" from Dog Day Afternoon? What I remember best from that movie (besides how HOT young Al Pacino was) is "Kiss me." "Kiss you?" Yeah, kiss me. I liked to be kissed when I'm getting fucked." Maybe that's the one they wanted to nominate but couldn't because of the f-curse.

Second, I was surprised by the number of double winners from - really - pretty mediocre movies. Jerry McGuire was okay. Pretty good even for something made by a big studio in the last 15 years or so. But show me the money and you had me at hello? Pretty good scenes, yeah, but the quotes themselves not so much.

I could've taken more than one quote from Airplane, for example. How does one choose among, "Don't call me Shirley," "Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up amphetamines," "I speak jive," "I have a drinking problem," and the rest of the one/two-liners that made this movie a classic?

A Streetcar Named Desire is beautifully written. The dialogue is exquisite, but I'm not so sure I'd pick Stella as one of the top 100, especially after kindness of strangers. The end of that play/movie is heartbreaking. The Stella part is mostly just about Marlon Brando being another fucking fox in his youth.

Toga, Toga is another case of the AFI wimping out in the nomination process. Yes. Toga parties ensued for several years, but not because of the quote. The great quotes from that movie? "Do you mind if we dance with your dates?" "I'm a zit. Get it?" "You fucked up. You trusted us." And Donald Sutherland's Milton thing.

"My precious" is the best they can come up with from the entire Tolkien Trilogy? Pfft. Same with "May the force be with you" from Star Wars.

That's all. For now.
