Subject: Terms of Use

I was reading through Girard's chapter on Historical Christianity in Things Hidden and I came across this passage: "Kill or be killed. The answer is: be killed, not as result of masochism, or the 'death instinct', but so that the child will live" (242). This really stuck out to me because it was a different way of looking at what we commonly term 'sacrifice'. What if instead of 'sacrifice' we called it 'substitution'. I really enjoyed how Girard posed that since the child's life is so important to a parent, that parent would be willing to do anything, even substitute their lives, so that the child would live. I think this is a BIG distinction between mimetic sacrifice and the sacrificial language in the Bible that tends to be overlooked. Love is the reason for substitution.
