This competition over "high roads" reminds me of Boccaccio's story about Nathan and Mithridanes. In both cases, the rivalry has become rather ridiculous, just because the object is something that ought to discourage rivalry, rather than escalate it. Nathan and Mithridanes engage in acquisitive rivalry over generosity, and James and Jamie fight over who can be more conciliatory. Saying "whatever stops the argument" is a little like saying "I don't care if I can have it, as long as my sister can't". By apologizing, Jamie keeps Tyrone from winning the argument, at least temporarily.
