Subject: Peace is Infuriating

Jamie: “All right, Papa. I’m a bum. Anything you like, so long as it stops the argument” (33). This, of course, is perhaps the most infuriating thing you can say to someone you are arguing with (not “All right, Papa,” but “Anything you like, so long as it stops the argument”). When I think about why, the obvious reason is because it sounds like the one to whom this is said is taking the high road. Their taking the high road is a problem, however, because it closes the distance between the two people. The argument consists of Tyrone trying to persuade Jamie to take what Tyrone thinks is the higher road, and Jamie arguing the same from a different perspective. When Jamie pulls the “peace” card, he presents a high road which no one, not even Tyrone, can ignore; if Tyrone rejects it, then he admits that he would rather fight than be at peace with his son, and this of course is unacceptable. So now Tyrone finds himself agreeing with someone who holds positions which Tyrone despises. Tyrone wants to be the one talking about peace, but meanwhile he is compelled to put more distance between himself and his model, which he attempts by stepping up his accusations “with indignant appeal now” (33sd).
