Subject: Self-Help Books

"We learn this from all the manuals that point us toward success in love, in business and in social life. In our world duplicity is covered with a veneer of morality. Manuals like these actually know a good deal more than Freud about the workings of desire, not because their authors are more observant, but because since his time things have developed in the direction of an increasingly relentless and crass mimetic rivalry" (Things 373).

So what are self-help books I ask myself? They're pretty much exactly what Girard is talking about, yes? I was especially interested in the line "In our world duplicity is covered with a veneer of morality". I think this suits many things in modern society. Self-help books, diet books, cult religions, and many more. Everyone tells you that they are simply trying to help you; they have your best interest at heart. However, this is commonly just a ploy used to direct our inherent mimetic characteristics. We need something to mimic and we are commonly duped by the veneer of morality that is presented to us.
