Ah Stephen King. Probably one of my all time favorite authors. There is a movie out called "The Mist" which is based on his novella of the same name. I watched this movie and was struck over the head with a baseball bat by how obvious the Girardian scapegoat mechanism was. Geez.

There is one scene that was absolutely fantastic for displaying this scapegoat mechanism. I don't want to spoil the movie too much so I won't go into a lot of detail. There is a woman who first blames the horrors on a military guy. This guy has no connection to what has happened besides the fact that he is in the army and was stationed at the base. He was simply a door guard, but the woman blames him for everything that has happened. Her preaching gets the crowd so worked up that they start attacking the guy and someone stabs him three times. She then yells "Feed him to the beast!" and they throw him outside where the monsters eat him.

She then says that the beast will leave them alone tonight, but come tomorrow, well, we'll just have to see. This is just begging for a repeat performance.

Later, she repeats the cycle, this time crying out for a child's life because she says that human blood must be sacrificed to appease the angry God.

The great thing about this is that she does this all in the name of God - God from the Old Testament. She quotes a lot of Bible verses from Revelation and the OT about God of vengence, blood, and sacrifice. Oh great stuff.
