Subject: Cain and Abel

We spoke much last week about the possibility of Abel offering only because he was imitating Cain's offering, in which case, I think Zach suggested, Abel wouldn't be offering for any better motives than Cain. This is problematic, we said, because God accepts Abel's offering; were Abel merely offering out of rivalry, God wouldn't have shown him favor. Alter's translation says that "Cain brought from the fruit of his soil... And Abel too had brought from the first fruit of his flock." Is it possible that Abel offered first, and Cain imitated? Obviously Cain offered out of rivalry...but Abel's "had brought" suggests that he actually offered first
