Oh, yes. Originality, though intentional and imitative, can be good. Since making the previous post, though, I should like to add some things. The main part of the title of my paper is "The Illusion of Autonomy". Isabel's error is not just that she tries to be original; it is that she tries to be autonomous. She wants not only to be independent of societal norms and prohibitions, but she also rejects the love of her family and friends, and some of her best chances in life (i.e., marrying Lord Warburton) for the sake of "marrying only to please herself". She tries to do this over and over again, until she realizes that her ultimate model for originality and autonomy is actually a witless imitator, and none of the autonomy she perceived really exists.
