As I'm sure we've all seen, In the classic film "Eric the Viking" there are times when the monstrous is exactly what is being encouraged. I think of course of the Viking Berserkers who train themselves to lose all control of their bodies, froth at the mouth, and perform all kinds of non-human acts during battle. These Vikings form a "needed" part of their society. Now, I dont mean to equate Viking Berzerkers with puppies, but sometimes the Girardian(Dangerous/Violent) Monstrous is encouraged by a society that needs just that, a dangerous monster that is not quite human but not quite not. I dont know that I could think of a Girardian explanation for the Animals bit that you brought up, but there is the "baby-drive" explanation that has already been mentioned.
