The question if there is a good and bad version to the “monstrous” is really interesting. The term “monstrous” itself usually has a negative connotation. I also have dogs and admit I talk to them all them time. One thing I’ve noticed that people do is create different personalities for each pet. All 3 of my dogs are very different – one is very aloof, another borderline psychotic and the other somewhat inquisitive/lazy. I think people make their pets seem more human so the relationship feels more normal. I guess what I am trying to say is that by applying human characteristics to an animal the owner can have more of a connection. I understand that my dogs are just pets and try not to go overboard with making them more human but by thinking about each personality and talking with them I feel better about myself. Like Caitlin I never really thought of the closeness of dogs and humans as blurring the boundaries, and I agree that it does make sense. Another thing this topic made me think of is the owners and dogs that look alike. It’s amusing to see how occasionally the dog will in someway look like their owner. The closest thing my dogs and my family have in common is that all my dogs are kind of tall, and I come from a tall family. Just for fun here is a website that shows owners and dogs that look alike: Lookalikes
