I think sometimes people realize their model was not the best model. I think other times the person will choose a model and try and become as great as them (or greater) and end up failing. When they realize they can never be like their model they begin to justify not continuing to try and be like them. In other words they begin to see anything bad/immoral/etc. about the person no matter how small it is. When it comes to if Estelle’s husband is a “victim” or not I think that is a great question. My guess is that most people probably automatically think of him as a victim because his wife cheated on him and ended up dead. However as you point out Estelle loathes her husband and we’ll never really get to see why (since we don’t know what he’s really like). Is he a really selfish/bad person or did he simply stop giving Estelle everything she wanted? The whole notion of a love/hate relationship is fascinating. They have contempt for the “good” person in their life probably because they realize how different they were from them, and how they could never/will never be as “good” as them. Maybe it’s because they can’t reach their level that they want to try and bring their models down closer to theirs.
