I live in Whitley and was watching TV with a group of girls when Judith told us about the “lice” incident. At this time it was believed to have been over 20 cases of lice. I was actually told both Mac and Olds had cases of lice. I think everyone in the room was relieved that the cases were so far away from Whitley so chances of anyone in Whitley getting lice was slim. People also seemed to immediately plan on staying away from those two dorms. I’ll admit my first reaction was one of relief, too. I was glad I lived in Whitley and not Mac anymore. One thing I have noticed when talking about lice, or when something like this happens, is how many people’s scalps start to itch. I remember being in 5th grade and watching a video about lice. Afterwards everyone’s heads itched. I just think the whole mimesis that occurs is fascinating. Even when people know they don’t have lice they begin to mimic one of the symptoms. My head began to itch a little bit after Judith told us but I didn’t want to scratch because I didn’t want the group of girls I was with to freak out. I was later talking with my roommate who said she had been thinking the same thing. I’m sure other girls’ heads began to itch too but no one wanted to actually scratch their head in fear of making the people around them believe they could have lice.
