Exacerbated the problem, yeah, but how? By leaving it unfinished? This would make things worse by prolonging the solution, but I don’t know many people who get ticked off merely by unfinished arguments—ticked because the problem is still unresolved. Most seem to want, as you as you say actually, “some form of victory,” but this is generally victory over the other person’s argument; at best they want to persuade the other person. The joy here isn’t conclusion (though it ought to be), but in changing another’s view, or, if the person is humble, in having one’s own view changed. Yeah, it’s irksome to have unfinished business with somebody, but it’s not irksome simply because it’s another thing on the agenda to check off. Take this post for instance . . . it’s annoyed me that I’ve been too busy to respond for four days, but to be honest the real annoyance hasn’t been that I can’t wait to agree, or even agree to disagree, it’s that I can’t wait to assert my right opinion over your wrong one. (Sorry.) Although I ought to be interested in “actual peace,” as you say, I’m a case in point that people naturally desire victory more than resolution—or maybe only that I do . . . .
