Subject: CS Lewis and Stock Responses

Lewis is not completely opposed to mimetic imitation. In his poem 'A Confession,' Lewis talks about "stock responses." Stock responses are those responses which certain things merit. They are the natural and proper response to seeing a waterfall or a sunrise or a dying child. The idea of the stock response is of course a response to many of the images in Eliot's poems, but the idea of a stock response is similar to the idea of imitation which Girard proposed earlier in the semester. Girard wrote somewhere (no citation, cant find it)that all societies encouraged imitation because it allowed for a common set of cultural norms, mores, and customs. Lewis' idea of stock responses is similar to this as it calls for every member of the community to share at least in common cultural ideals and customs.
