I think Lewis talked about stock responses in the Abolition of Man as well. He talked about men who grew up with their natural sentiments intact, and those who were trained out of having sentiments altogether. If I may mix works terribly, in Dr. Whalen's class we read Brideshead Revisited, in which Julia describes her husband as "not a real man, only a collection of faculties". He was brilliant and talented, but he had no feelings. I think people's temperament often depends on the kinds of models they grow up with. Some children grow up stoical, and some grow up very sensitive. I think Lewis was proposing that we present children with models of -- forgive me -- sentimentality so that they would learn to behave as more than just collections of faculties.
