Subject: Love Triangles in Chaucer

In Dr. Bart's Medievel Literature class we read Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and ever since Dr. Jackson mentioned the occurence of love triangle in Chaucer I had to keep an eye out for them, even in the few tales we read. I just wanted to mention some of them. In "The Merchant's Tale" a love triangle emerges between the main character Januarie, an elderly knight, his young beautiful wife Mayus, and her lover Damyan whom Januarie actually catches committing adultery. Also, in "The Miller's Tale" there is a love triangle between John the carptenter, his wife Alison and her young lover Nicholas. Then, whenever one of the men is away, Alison's admirer Absolon enters the picture. I was just surprised by the number of Medievel love triangles in the "Canterbury Tales" alone.
