Subject: Burnt by the Sun

For my Russian film/theatre class one of the movies we watched was Burnt by the Sun. I would highly recommend it. It is about Colonel Kotov, a revolutionary hero, who is spending the summer in his dacha. While there an old family friend, Mitya, comes to visit. It is revealed that Mitya used to be lovers with Kotov’s wife but was sent off to war by none other than Kotov. Throughout the movie you can see the rivalry between Kotov and Mitya grow. Mitya is a likeable character and even begins to have Kotov’s little daughter like him. Mitya, however, is not there just to visit with old friends and play games. He is there on official business; he works for Stalin by investigating/finding traitors. You can tell while watching he is using his personal views of Kotov to influence his business. I don’t really want to give away the ending but the rivalry proves very frustrating. The viewer feels sorry for Kotov because his wife and child like Mitya’s company. Kotov is a highly respected Colonel and a very familiar face. You can see why someone like Mitya could be jealous and try and scapegoat Kotov very easily. Kotov is not only successful but he is happily married to a younger woman who Mitya would have probably married had it not been for Kotov.
