Another instance of imitation in "Little Miss Sunshine" occurs with the little girl Olive, who spurs the family's cross country trip in the first place. She competed in a beauty pageant and got runner-up and since the winner bowed out of the follow up competition, Olive was eager to take her place in the 'Little Miss Sunshine' beauty pageant. Olive is a cute little girl, but she does not look like these walking dolls who make up the beauty pageant. She is a little on the chunky side, wears big glasses, and wears her hair in just a pony tail. She knows she does not look like the other girls, which bothers her, but she consciously imitates the beauty pageant contestants she has seen on television. in order to attempt to compete with them. In the beginning scenes of the movie, Olive is seen watching a tape pageant and she tries to imitate the contestant's reaction as well as possible. She sucks in her gut, does the little wave and even the surprised/happy crying when the contestant wins. She even rewinds the tape and practices her reaction as much as she practices her actual talent routine.
