Subject: Decline of Greek Generals

At the end of his Life of Cimon, Plutarch says that after Cimon no brilliant victory was won again by an Athenian general, but only demagogues and warmongers ruled from then on. The good generals who commanded the army and navy before Pericles came into power aso had power in the Assembly at home in Athens. After generalship became an elected position, the subsequent politicians saw the power that the generals had possessed, and tried to imitate it by gaining control of the Assembly. But they left out the military endeavors that had always accompanied political power. They imitated the part of the duty that they saw, but were ignorant of the most important part.
