It's lucky Girard has got Plutarch's back. Poor Plutarch just couldn't articulate what he was trying to. Now, the ancient Hellenic practice of selecting founders for a city, even if the city already existed and the founding action of these people is entirely fictitious, speaks to a precocious awareness on the part of the Greeks. Not only does Plutarch notice when his subjects follow certain models, but all of Greek society understood the importance of having a common figure to stimulate positive mimesis. The actual effect produced by the founder was much more important than the reality of the city's founding.
