I forgot to add this bit that Thucydides says when describing the revenge cycles that tore apart first Corcyra and then the rest of Greece. Thucydides writes: "for, if it had not been for the pernicious power of envy, men would not so have exalted vengeance above innocence and profit above injustice.”
Envy, the embodiment of acquisitive mimesis run wild, is attributed with the destructive torrent that at last envelops what were once (relatively) peaceful city states. Now I'm not saying that Thucydides unmasked mimetic contagion, I'm just saying that it sounds an awful lot like he's unmasking mimetic contagion.
