Subject: "Christ wept"

I've been thinking a lot about the verse from the gospel of John that we read together in class: "Christ wept." I had assumed that Jesus was weeping in mourning of Lazerus. I still assume this to be the meaning of the words, that Christ experienced all human emotion and sadness while on earth. Lewis, as he has for most of this semester, offers an alternative reading in the poem "Stephen to Lazarus." Stephen says to Lazarus: "But was I the first martyr, who / Gave up no more than life, while you, / Already free among the dead/ ...Put out a second time to sea, / well knowing that your death...must all be died again?" Jesus, so thinks Mr Lewis, weeps for the poor Lazarus who will soon be coming back to the land of 'the living'. The crowd sees him, however, and declares that he must be weeping for the dead man who he loved, projecting an imitation of themselves onto Christ.
