Someone once said that Christians over emphasize the bible...he said the trinity does not consist of Father, Son and Holy Bible....but Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Can we maintain a relationship with God outside of the bible?

Well, that someone probably belonged to the pentecostal movement, would be my guess.
You know, short answer: you can swing the pendulum in 2 directions, but it's stable only when it comes to rest in the middle.

We can see from the Gospels that the Lord Jesus was always busy quoting the Scriptures when revealing Himself as the Christ and when dealing with false piety... how could He do that if He wasn't fully aware of the contents of the Scriptures?

Also, we know that the Bible, though being written down by men, is divinely inspired and as such, the Word of God spoken out through men. If we say that we care for God, but not for what God has to say, we're deceiving ourselves or we're straight out lying.

Another problem is that while an over-emphasis on the written words can lead one to legalize many matters and miss the practical enjoyment of Christ, to neglect the written words will cause one to be ignorant on important matters and miss the reality of Christ by falling into worshipping an imaginary God not identical with the one revealed in the Bible(as such: an idol).

The whole point is: wherever the balance is lacking, there's something wrong, but one can not burn the Bible in order to counteract literalism.

In Christ,
Mike K.
